• How Does Using Art in Therapy Help Kids Heal?

When children struggle with big feelings, they don’t always have the words to explain what’s going on – especially when they’re right in the middle of those feelings. Play therapy meets children in their world, engaging in what they’re naturally great at: play! One of the most common tools we use is art. It gives kids a chance to express themselves creatively, not just verbally.

Art creates a space for kids to slow down, explore emotions, and express things indirectly. This can be especially helpful for kiddos who are more reserved or hesitant to talk. In play therapy, using art is never about how “good” the drawing or project is, it’s about the process and what the child is trying to communicate through it.

    Using art in therapy can:

    • Reduce anxious feelings by giving kids a way to communicate without talking
    • Build emotional awareness by helping them find words for their feelings
    • Increase communication in a non-threatening, child-led way
    • Bring forward emotions or thoughts they didn’t even realize were there
    • Strengthen connection between the therapist and child through shared creativity
    • Encourage mindfulness by helping kids slow down and be present with what they’re creating
    • Tap into imagination and creativity, giving them freedom to explore without pressure
    • Help kids feel proud of their “work,” boosting confidence and self-esteem

The use of art in play therapy gives a child a voice when words feel too hard. It turns healing into something approachable, gentle, and completely centered around the child.
