Play Therapy
There are a lot of misunderstandings about what play therapy is.
Play therapy IS:
- A powerful and effective intervention that allows children to process their feelings and express themselves in the way that is most natural for their developing bodies and brains
- A way for children to use toys to tell their stories and express their feelings
- A method through which trained therapists are able to reflect, challenge, and encourage, all within the context of play
- An opportunity to develop and practice limit setting, conflict resolution, and social and emotional skills.
Play therapy IS NOT:
- Letting children play with toys while talking to them about how to manage their feelings
- A way to make therapy seem more fun so that kids will want to come
- A backup plan when talking doesn't work
